Sizzlewich is now open and serving Vietnamese crepes and Waterbean coffee
One of Charlotte’s newest breakfast and lunch experiences, Sizzlewich X Waterbean Coffee, is now open. Sizzlewich rolled out a grand opening on July 14 at 3607 Whitehall Park Drive, Ste. 1200, introducing a fast-casual breakfast and lunch menu with Banh Xeo, or Vietnamese crepes. Waterbean’s coffee is poured here as well.
“When I started our first location in Cornelius,” owner Tony Vo posted on Waterbean’s Facebook page, “I didn’t want to do things that had been done before. I wanted to continue to redefine the art of coffee and offer products that you cannot get at just any coffee shop.”
Growing up, Vo’s favorite food was the traditional Vietnamese Banh Xeo, crafted by his grandmother.
“The food is unlike anything you have ever tasted,” Vo wrote in an email. “It’s crispy on the outside and full of flavors on the inside. It’s best when you eat it right away after it’s cooked. Made with rice flour, Banh Xeo is filled with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, and served on a bed of lettuce, fresh mint, and basil with a side of spicy dipping sauce.”
Today, Vo’s menu is loaded with Sizzlewiches/Banh Xeo combinations, all with the same base of provolone cheese, scallions, lettuce and special sauce. The offerings include the Ham Sizzlewich, the Super Sizzlewich (with ham, turkey, bacon and salami) and the Vegetable Sizzlewich (with mushrooms and onions). The signature breakfast dish is the Bo Ne, or Dancing Cow, featuring thinly sliced ribeye steak, egg and Vietnamese ham, topped with tomato, onion, scallions, and cilantro. It comes with bread and clear soup (which can be poured onto the cow-shaped plate to evoke a sizzling sound).
Vo said the restaurant offers craft beer on tap and wine as well, and notes that the Banh Xeo dishes are gluten-free.
“Overall, this restaurant concept would not have happened if it weren’t for my grandmother,” Vo said. “She has always made sure her grandson did not have an empty stomach.”
