What happens when two mayoral candidates work together to define millennial slang terms
Who: Vi Lyles, Democratic candidate for Charlotte mayor, faced off in a mayoral debate against Kenny Smith, Republican candidate for Charlotte mayor. Charlotte Observer development reporter Ely Portillo moderated (no, Ely is not running for mayor).
We recorded the conversation for this week’s CharlotteFive Podcast.
What: Well, first, the two candidates had to compete against the young professionals in the room at CharlotteFive’s 35 Below speaker series at the Charlotte City Club in a good old game of Charlotte Trivia: Millennials vs. Mayors. Listen to find out who won — and what happens when two mayoral candidates work together to define millennial slang terms.
On a deeper level, the two candidates, who both serve on the Charlotte City Council, discussed what inspired them to run in the first place. The short: Smith believes his leadership, communication and vision could elevate the city, and that he could do better than what has been done during recent chaos. Lyles thinks Charlotte has been losing tradition and values, and that we need changes in order to remember our history and to continue being a great city.
Other topics they covered included public transportation, bringing jobs to Charlotte and the nondiscrimination ordinance.
