Charlotte’s first cat café opens Saturday with a dozen adoptable cats
Back in September, we reported that Mac Tabby Cat Café was planning on opening in November in Area 15 on N. Davidson Street. With the help of community support, pledging over $21,000 in 30 days, the café will officially open this Saturday at noon.
Owner Lori Konawalik has been around cats her entire life. One day, her husband asked, “If you could do anything, take all the logistics out of it, what would it be?”
Her response? “Get cats rescued, hang out with cool people and be around artsy musicians.”
“Well, just do it,” her husband said. And from there, Konawalik was on her way to making one of her dreams a reality.
One of Mac Tabby’s main roles is to foster all 12 cats from local nonprofit Catering to Cats and Dogs. The adoptable cats are all spayed and neutered with shots and bloodwork updated for each animal. You can adopt a cat for $125, once you have filled out an application on Mac Tabby’s website. From there, Catering to Cats and Dog will handle the decisions, communications, and coordinate the adoptions.
If you can’t wait until Saturday, here’s a look at the dozen cats available to adopt.
Inside, you can enjoy local bites including M&M chocolate chip cookies and gluten free cookies from A Smart Cookie, Raw Crunch Bars, along with local beverages, such as Lenny Boy Brewing kombucha, hot drip coffee from Pure Intentions Coffee, and more.
Merchandise includes cat earrings, t-shirts from Ink Floyd, and local art for sale. According to Konawalik, the cats enjoy live music, so if you know how to play guitar, you can grab one of the two they have to play.
“I can’t wait for people that don’t like cats to walk in here,” Konawalik said. “I want to show people that cats are amazing animals.”
To all the cat lovers, you can’t bring your own cat inside the café.
You can book a reservation to visit this Friday starting at 4 p.m. An hourly reservation is $12 per guest. Monthly memberships are also available.
