6 of the best vegan and vegetarian eateries, with dishes from cookies and milk to BBQ grit bowls
We get it: The South isn’t exactly known for dubious amounts of plant-based foods, what with our fatback and bacon-laced everything. But Charlotte seems to be catching on in the world of veganism and some great plant-based eateries to keep the herbivores in your life happy.
Here are 6 of the best:
Living Kitchen
2000 S. Blvd #300 and 4521 Sharon Road Suite 175
Vibe: Clean, sleek and boujee. Wooden tables surrounded with greenery and large art. Relaxed and peaceful feel.
What to Order: BBQ Sliders ($10). Being in the South, barbeque is a must and Living Kitchen’s version is magical. Made with Oyster Mushrooms and cashew mayo, topped with jalapeno coleslaw, you’ll forget it’s vegan. For dessert, try the Cookies and Milk ($6.50). You even get to pick your own vegan milk.
Price Range: $8-$14
Bean Vegan Cuisine
3001 E. Independence Blvd.
Vibe: Old-school diner, relaxed. If you’re looking for comfort food, this is your spot. There is even a small market section inside the restaurant with all your vegan staples.
What to Order: Tofu Fingers ($7.99) in barbeque, Southern style, buffalo or teriyaki. If you show up for brunch on the weekends, the BBQ Grit Bowl is a must ($12.99).
Price Range: $3.99-$13.99
Comic Girl Coffee
1224 Commercial Ave.
Vibe: Low-key nerdy in the most endearing way, and self-described inclusive space for marginalized communities.
What to Order: While you can always grab a coffee, complete with vegan milk substitutes, vegan food is brought in from Shonda Caines for weekend brunch from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The menu varies but usually includes tofu scrambles, curry dishes and other specialties influenced by her Caribbean Island upbringing. Check social media for updates.
Price Range: $10 and under, but varies
Fern
1419 East Blvd. A
Vibe: Fancy, relaxed, hip. Fern is a great spot for date night or a group. The patio overlooking East Boulevard sits atop brick with string lights hanging overhead giving it a very relaxing vibe. Full vegetarian and mostly vegan.
What to Order: Tempeh Rueben ($14), with breaded tempeh with vegan cheese and thousand island dressing, served on Dukes Rye Bread or the Spinach and Artichoke Risotto ($16), made with cashew cheese and topped with micro basil.
Price Range: $5- $18
Ma Ma Wok
11914 Elm Lane, Suite 100
Vibe: Casual atmosphere with minimal décor, located in a corner spot in a shopping center.
What to Order: Curry Stew ($12.99) featuring Veg. Chicken (all meats made from either soy or wheat protein) with potatoes, carrots, celery, lima beans and tofu.
Price Range: $1.79- $16.99
Cinnaholic
6461 Old Monroe Road Suite F, Indian Trail
Vibe: Small, relaxed donut shop feel. This is the 22nd location in a corporate chain but maintains a quaint neighborhood feel.
What to Order: My go-to is a build-your-own with hazelnut frosting, brownie bits and raspberries ($6), and while you’re at it, grab a brownie to-go for later ($2.50). Pair it with Pure Intentions coffee and you’ll be in sugar heaven.
Price Range: $2.50+ (prices vary for individual rolls up to sheet cake rolls)
Fresh Vibes Juice Bar
1675 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill, SC
Vibe: Drive-through or walk-up spot with a handful of bright orange outdoor tables. Grab a juice, smoothie, or vegan sandwich to-go.
What to Order: Vegan, Soy-Free Cheeseburger Wrap ($9.50)m with meatless/soy-free “beef” crumbles topped with onion, vegan cheddar cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, vegan mayo, ketchup and mustard .
