Just in time for vacation plans, there are new international flights from Charlotte
American, which is the dominant carrier at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, said weekly flights to the islands of Eleuthera and Marsh Harbour will start Dec. 22, with tickets going on sale May 14. Both flights will operate on Saturdays year-round, and will be on smaller jets that seat just over 70 passengers, the Embraer 175 and the Bombardier CRJ-700.
Charlotte Douglas has nonstop flights to 36 international destinations, the majority of them in the Caribbean and Latin America, as well as several major European destinations such as Rome, Paris, Munich and London.
The expansion is part of a broader move by American to increase the number of trips from its hubs to Caribbean and Hawaii.
The carrier is also adding such routes from Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago, as well as increasing the capacity between London and hubs in Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth.
At the same time, American said it will end its nonstop Chicago-Beijing service in October. Vasu Raja, the company’s vice president of network and schedule planning, said American will seek to restart the flight when Beijing’s new international airport opens next year.
“The current fare environment severely limits our ability to successfully compete between Chicago and Beijing. We remain committed to China and anticipate that moving to the new Beijing airport in the future will improve the viability of the route,” said Raja.
