A quick breakdown of yesterday’s mayoral and city council primary election results

Charlotte voters trekked out to the polls Tuesday to nominate candidates for mayor and city council. The primary elections essentially chose council members from three districts where there’s no general election and offered the chance to nominate candidates in other districts where one party dominates.

The mayoral results:

City of Charlotte Mayor

Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Vi Lyles won the Democratic mayoral nomination without a runoff, upsetting Mayor Jennifer Roberts. Lyles, a former city budget director and assistant city manager, will face Republican Kenny Smith in November.

In other upset news, two City Council incumbents were defeated in their re-election bids in the Democratic primary when Patsy Kinsey lost the District 1 seat and Claire Fallon lost the at-large race.
