5 ways to cure your hangover on New Year’s Day

Planning a big night out on the town to ring in the new year? You may be craving some hangover cures for that first, potentially rough day of 2017. Here are five options:

(1) Dig into brunch.

Need food and a Bloody Mary to get through this day? Famous Toastery is open for regular hours on Jan. 1. All the eggs and hot sauce. 2400 Park Road and other locations.

If you must step up your game, Evoke has a themed brunch: The Come to Your Senses Hangover Brunch. The feast goes from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Expect Neapolitan Eggs Benedicts, Salmone Affumicato and more on the menu. $55 per person. Reservations can be made through OpenTable. 555 S. McDowell St.

Also in uptown, 5Church will be hosting a New Year’s Day Brunch Buffet, complete with Avocado and Pumpernickel Toast, Bourbon French Toast with Candied Pecans, Pear Compote and Chai Syrup, Applewood Smoked Bacon and more. The spread will be available from 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. $35/person and $21/person 12 years and under. 127 N. Tryon St.

(2) Make hangover chili.

When I was a young pup in college, my dad swore by this method. Basically you tuck into a bowl of really spicy chili to knock you back to your senses. If you can’t make it out into public on New Year’s Day, give this Spicy Vegetarian Chili recipe a shot.

(3) Take the “hair of the dog” approach.

Birdsong Brewing Co. will be serving house-made bloody beers with a complimentary bagel bar from Owen’s Bagels and coffee from Central Coffee Co. While you’re there, catch the release of the Puppies on Penguins ale. Get full details here. 1016 N Davidson St.

Meanwhile, Free Range Brewing will be giving out free bowls of soup from noon-7 p.m., thanks to local chefs Clark Barlowe, Marc Jacksina, Jamie Swofford and Rodney Roden. Also expect a pickle bar and rolls from Duke’s Bread, plus sweet stuff from Your Mom’s Donuts from noon-4 p.m. Get full details here2320 N Davidson St.

(4) Sit in the dark.

One word: Movie. I’d opt for a quieter, no-nonsense place like the Regal Manor Twin. “Manchester by the Sea” and “Jackie” are on the showtimes listing for Jan. 1. The movies start in the afternoon, so you have plenty of time to hide out under your covers. 609 Providence Road.

(5) Suck it up and sweat it out.

Y2 Yoga is open all day with classes starting at 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. (274 S. Sharon Amity Road). Classes at Charlotte Yoga start at 8 a.m., too (1430 Winnifred St. and 1730 E. Woodlawn Road, Suite E). If interval workouts are more your speed, MADabolic has classes starting at 8:30 a.m. (2610 South Blvd.)

Or maybe all you can handle is a brisk walk around the pond at Freedom Park. Just keep this mantra in mind: New year, new you.
