The C5 Checklist: 5 things you should do this weekend | Jan. 27-29
The weekend is so close I can almost taste it. Make a point to get a taste of something yourself, whether that means venturing out for a nearby (and possibly free!) wine tasting, or taking advantage of Queen’s Feast while it lasts (through Jan. 29).
Five other options for your weekend fun:
(1) Get cultural
Saturday, Jan. 28 is Connect with Culture Day, with the Arts & Science Council promoting diverse arts, science and history experiences across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area for free. On the menu: Free admission and docent-led tours at the Bechtler, free admission and a mobile glass studio demonstration at the Mint, free admission and bluegrass music at Levine Museum of the New South, free guided tours of the Hezekiah Alexander House at the Charlotte Museum of History, and the list goes on.
(2) Take on a physical challenge
We can’t be caught up in the challenges of adulting all the time. Test your fitness instead, with the first Kinetic Heights Ninja Warrior Open Challenge Jan. 28. This is a free event that gives you a shot at the Ninja Warrior Training Course, with the top five times from each age group competing in a final round. Reservations required. 7 a.m. Kinetic Heights at Providence Square Shopping Center, 5664 International Dr.
(3) Get a laugh
Charlotte playwright Elaine Alexander presents her Southern satirical comedy show, “A Southern Girl’s Got To Have It,” at C3 Lab. The show will be performed by the Charlotte acting troupe The Hot Mess Players Jan. 27-28. $20 gives you access to the show, live music performed by Alicia Driver of Grievous Angels and food from Spoons BBQ. Get tickets at http://tiny.cc/southerngirl or through the website: www.c3-lab.com/events. The show is recommended for mature audiences. (Don’t you love that?) 7 p.m. at C3 Lab, 2525 Distribution St.
(4) See something new
Grab a drink and take in the Opening Reception for “The World is a Mirror of My Freedom” on Jan. 27. On display, with free admission, will be works from five of McColl Center’s current and alumni artists-in-residence – Marcus Kiser, Jason Woodberry, Shaun Leonardo, Dread Scott and Charles Williams. This exhibition responds to the violence against black people in Charlotte and in the country. Don’t overlook the DJ and cash bar. 6-9 p.m. McColl Center for Art + Innovation, 721 N. Tryon St.
(5) Show support
Find a fundraiser you believe in.
Maybe you’ve bumped into Philip Sanford at various C5 events. He’s hosting a Get Your Rear In Gear Fundraiser Jan. 29 for an afternoon of prizes, music and mingling to raise money for the Get Your Rear In Gear 5K in Charlotte, in memory of his mother. Visit the Team Sanford page to sign up for the race or to donate. 1-5 p.m. at Triple C. Brewing Co., 2900 Griffith St.
You can also get a little fancy with the 100 Love Notes Book Launch Gala Jan. 28. This evening supports the 100 Love Notes Foundation, which formed after Assistant City Manager Hyong Yi honored his late wife by distributing 100 love notes to strangers uptown. The original notes have been incorporated into two books featuring art by 17 different artists. Tickets: $50 per person or $90 per couple. 7-9 p.m. Ciel Gallery, 128 E Park Ave.
Alternatively, you can pick out a local charity in the SHARE Charlotte database — there are at least 400 for you to browse — and ponder the ways that are best for you to contribute.
Do some good this weekend.
