Meet the mother-daughter team behind one of Charlotte’s most popular fitness studios

It was 2007 and Clary Hilliard was getting married. She was running and working out every day but not getting the kind of results she wanted. So she went to her mom, Liz, a pilates instructor.

Liz started incorporating resistance training and core-focused workouts into traditional pilates — and it worked. Clary saw results. And Hilliard Studio Method was born.

Since then, Hilliard Studio Method has expanded rapidly, to multiple studios and a video subscription service. Liz and Clary, the mother-daughter team behind HSM, joined us on this week’s CharlotteFive Podcast.

HSM recently launched a new website that allows users to live-stream workouts, and soon its second HSM | Core studio will open in Stonecrest, bringing the total number of HSM studios in the area to four.

It’s fitting that we’re releasing this podcast with two powerful women and business owners — who have also inspired and empowered countless other women — on International Women’s Day.

We also talked to Liz and Clary about:

– Why they decided to start Hilliard Studio Method, and when they knew they were onto something big.

– What it’s like running a business as a mother-daughter duo.

– How they managed the rapid growth of the studio, and what’s next for them.

– Liz’s new book, “Be Powerful: Find Your Strength At Any Age.”

– And why I should stop eating doughnuts.

Other stuff we talked about on this week’s CharlotteFive Podcast:

– My trip to a D.C. United soccer match, and whether Major League Soccer would work in Charlotte. (Yes, I got Sarah to talk about sports.)

– Sarah tells the story of famous Charlotte twins you’ve probably never heard of. (And I name drop a movie you probably don’t remember.)

– And what you should be doing this weekend. (You might be hurting on Monday.)
