How can we have better conversations about ‘taboo’ topics in Charlotte?
In a world where a new bombshell seems to drop every news cycle, how can we have better conversations around “taboo” topics? That’s the question seasoned political advisor and Queen City Forward leader Amy Chiou asked a room of 300+ at the March 3 meeting of CreativeMornings/Charlotte at Warehouse 242.
During her inspired talk on the CreativeMornings global theme of “Taboo,” Chiou challenged the audience to embrace the new atmosphere in which politics is working its way into everyday communication. As she unpacked what makes certain topics taboo in the public consciousness, Chiou also provided specific tools for making such conversations easier to navigate. She urged audience members not to “outsource” difficult conversations, but to lean into them, learn from them and work toward more productive dialogue.
It was a vibrant morning full of laughter, perspective-shifting stories and new thought-provoking insights — just what we needed during these politically polarizing times.
If you were not in the room (or even if you were and just want to relive it), here are two ways you can experience Amy Chiou’s talk. The first is a video of the event, courtesy of Charlotte Star Room.
The second is the latest episode of the #CharlotteIsCreative podcast, recorded immediately following her talk, in which Matt Olin and Tim Miner delve deeper into Amy Chiou’s personal experiences.
