In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, I am sharing a few local gift ideas and experiences that will help you support the environment in your own way, big or small.

Get zen on the water for Earth Day at My Aloha Paddle and Surf in Lake Norman. The business will offer two types of classes on Earth Day: Aloha Flow, which includes standing and seated postures on the paddleboard, and Slow Flow, which includes more basic and seated positions on the board.

Make a donation to Trees Charlotte, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to planting trees throughout the Queen City. According to their website their mission is to “expand the (tree) canopy by 50 percent by 2050.”
What does that mean in layman’s terms? To meet its mission, the organization must plant 500,000 trees, or canopy 12,000 acres by 2050. What a great cause with lasting benefits.

Be one with nature. Go camping at Mecklenburg County’s Reedy Creek Park. The facility welcomes families on Friday night, so everyone can wake up in the woods on Earth Day. The best part? Reedy Creek makes the event fuss-free by providing tents, campfires (with marshmallows), games, hikes and even a light breakfast in the morning.
