Everything you need to know about TEDx Charlotte, which returns in October

I’ve never been to a TEDx conference. I’ve never even watched one of the talks on YouTube. I’m sure I just lost some intellectual cool points by admitting that, but it’s true. And this made me all the more interested to talk to Winn Maddrey, the license holder of TEDx Charlotte, on this week’s CharlotteFive Podcast.

For the uninitiated (me), global TED Conferences (which spawn the “TED Talks”) bring together a bunch of smart people to talk about ideas on a global and national scale. TEDx is the independent version of that, staged in cities all around the world and those smaller conferences have become popular idea grounds for local entrepreneurs, community organizers and government officials.

This year’s TEDx Charlotte is Oct. 28 at the Dale F. Halton Theater at CPCC Central Campus (1206 Elizabeth Ave.) and tickets go on sale Sept. 1.

Listen to this week’s podcast to learn more about event, how the speakers are chosen and why Maddrey thinks it’s important to have a TEDx in Charlotte.

Other things you’ll hear on this week’s show:

– No Sarah Crosland. She couldn’t make it this week, so we let producer Richard Brooke get in front of a microphone.

– Opinions about LoSo. People have them, and we talked about them. Also, Richard rants about a bad experience he had at an event in LoSo.

– The Charlotte Food Trucks app.

– Whitewater coming back to the Whitewater Center.

– What to do this weekend.

The CharlotteFive Podcast — presented by The Charlotte Observer and powered by OrthoCarolina — is a weekly podcast that aims to get you Charlotte Smart, Fast with fun, interesting and useful news about the city. It’s hosted by Corey Inscoe and Sarah Crosland.
