News flash: J.Crew is killing its bridal line—but there’s hope

If you’ve had your heart set on the simple lines and classic silhouettes of J. Crew’s signature bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses, it’s time for a Plan B. The retail giant and purveyor of pared-down elegance announced this week that it is discontinuing its wedding line and expanding its offering of party dresses and “special occasion” wear.

The result? “The implosion of hundreds of thousands of bridal Pinterest boards,” as Elle Magazine put it. There also are some hefty sales, as J.Crew tries to unload its existing inventory.

As for why: J. Crew doesn’t disclose revenue from its bridal line, but its overall revenue was down 6 percent in the second quarter of 2016. Nixing the bridal line probably boiled down to a simple game of numbers and cost-cutting, The New York Times reported.

So while you’re certainly entitled to shed a tear, there is hope—and nearby. There are many amazing bridal boutiques in Charlotte that can give you the kind of personal attention you won’t find at a big-box store or national retail chain.
