What’s it like to cover Cam Newton? We asked the guys who wrote a book about him
The Carolina Panthers play their final preseason game tonight and the real season is right around the corner, which means it’s time to talk all things Panthers on the CharlotteFive Podcast.
This week we brought on two guys who know more about the Carolina Panthers than just about anyone else — Observer Panthers writers Joseph Person and Jonathan Jones.
The two also wrote a book about Cam Newton, “Super Cam,” which you can buy here.
The Panthers are coming off a season where they only lost two games and lost in the Super Bowl. Interest in Newton and the Panthers continues to grow. Our conversation with Jones and Person will get you ready for the upcoming season.
Among other things, we talked about:
– How this year’s team compares to last year’s.
– What the Super Bowl rematch the first game of the season in Denver will be like.
– What it’s really like to cover Cam Newton.
“It’s kind of like covering a rock star,” Person said about Newton. “The cool thing about it is we’ve watched Cam evolve over those five years. … He’s an interesting guy. … He’s just becoming more interesting, if that’s possible.”
Also on this week’s episode of the podcast:
– C5 co-editor Katie Toussaint makes her podcast debut, filling in for Sarah Crosland.
– We discuss the military jets that zoomed through uptown and how it confirmed everything I learned about fighter pilots from watching “Top Gun.”
– Katie talks about Haberdish, a new restaurant coming to NoDa, and the woman behind the cocktail list there and Crepe Cellar.
– I love pumpkin flavored beer and other things, but it’s too early — and too hot.
– And, of course, what you should be doing this Labor Day weekend.
