It was hard for some to believe that this was happening in their city. But it did. This happened in Charlotte last night.
Here’s what happened:
– A black man named Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed by a police officer yesterday.
– Police say the man had a gun and “posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers.” Family members say he was unarmed and reading a book, and that he was disabled. A woman who said she was Scott’s daughter started a Facebook Live stream soon after the shooting, saying that Scott was unarmed.
– Scott was shot and killed by CMPD Officer Brentley Vinson, who is also black.
– Police were at The Village at College Downs complex on Old Concord Road looking for someone who had an outstanding warrant. Scott was not the person they were looking for.
– Following the shooting, hundreds of people gathered in the University City area to protest.
– Many protesters called for peace. Others threw rocks and water bottles at police, and damaged at least a couple police cars.
– Police officers donned riot gear and fired tear gas into the crowd.
– The protest continued late into the night, blocking roads all around the University City area and at one point moving onto I-85.
