What it means to be a well-dressed man in Charlotte style
Regardless of profession, there are essential items (and a mindset) to being a classic, stylish, well-dressed man for every season and occasion.
David Watkins, founder of ABBEYDALE, a gentleman’s brand that blends modernism with a dash of nostalgia, believes that the nature of dressing well is based on having your own consistent look.
“When you walk into a room and you are put-together well and your clothes fit great, you create an impact on others,” he said. “Most of the time people can’t really put their finger on it, but you and everyone else in the room knows it’s there.”
According to GQ Magazine these are the 21 things every man should have in his closet:
- Oxford shirt
- Selvedge jeans
- Crewneck T-shirt
- Bomber jacket
- Navy Suit
- Grey crewneck sweater
- Timepiece
- Trench coat
- Laceup boots
- Everyday bag
- Sports coat
- White sneakers
- Polo shirt
- Khakis
- Jean jacket
- Brown laceup shoes
- Field jacket
- Casual shirt
- Cardigan
- Sweatpants
- Peacoat
These items are considered essentials, meaning:
- They will be the foundation for any outfit or style in a man’s wardrobe
- They should complement other items in a man’s wardrobe when put together
- They are compatible with other items in a man’s closet
- They serve a man well in the majority of situations from casual to business
Once you have the essentials, now it’s time to implement wearing your threads—on a regular basis.
Watkins’ advice on what to wear out
“Being well-dressed is more about consistency than sudden impact,” Watkins said. “It’s a daily ritual, a wardrobe that makes a connection each and every day.”
