5 ways to celebrate Halloween in Charlotte

I like to plan ahead for weekend events. And since Halloween falls on a Monday this year, you’ll want to make the most of the weekend leading up to it. Stock up on sugar, get brainstorming on that costume (try Spirit Halloween) and consider your plan of action.

(1) Select a spooky concert

“Fright at the Knight”Don your costume and head to Knight Theater Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. for Charlotte Symphony’s performance of scores from horror films like “Halloween,” “Poltergeist” and “Psycho.” General admission is $29. Knight Theater, 430 S. Tryon St.

Kiss 95.1 Grave Diggers Ball: This costume party on Oct. 29 features live music by Afrojack and Marc E. Bassy. 6 p.m. Cost: $22 and up. 500 North College St.

(2) Run in a costume

Charlotte Costume Dash 5K/10KTake on a 5K on Oct. 29, and don’t forget your costume — there’s a contest as well as an after party at Draught Charlotte. 5:30 p.m. The starting line is at Inside Out Sports, 1514 S. Church St. The cost is $45 through Oct. 26.

Hero Run: Conquer a 5K or 1K fun run in a super hero costume on Oct. 29 to honor U.S. military heroes and support Charlotte Bridge Home. 8 a.m. Cost: $15-$40. Fairview Plaza, 5950 Fairview Road.

Running Scared 5 Miler and Monster Mile: Yes, there is also a costume contest involved in this Oct. 29 event — for individuals, partners, groups and kids. And food trucks and a beer garden. 9 a.m. Cost: $25-$50. Outside of BB&T Ball Park, 324 S. Mint St.

(3) Explore something haunted

Haunted Carriage Rides: Make a reservation with Charlotte Center City Carriage Tours from 6:30-9:30 p.m. to ride through uptown on a horse-drawn carriage while listening to ghost stories. Oct. 28 and Oct. 31. Cost: $14-$22. Intersection of Trade and Tryon streets.

Haunted brewery tourBirdsong Brewing Co. is guiding this tour every 45 minutes from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 29. Also indulge in the release of the seasonal MexiCali Stout. The haunted tours are free and not recommended for kids. 1016 N. Davidson St.

Spirits of Rosedale: Go on a night tour of Historic Rosedale Plantation Oct. 29. You’ll move through the plantation home’s first floor, kitchen basement and gardens. Meet spirits bound there by of tragic epidemics, insanity and greed. Tours start every 20 minutes beginning at 7:20 p.m., with the last tour beginning at 9:20 p.m. $15. 3427 N. Tryon St.

(4) Burst into a block party

Nightmare on 5th Street Block Party: Start your bar crawl at 5 p.m. Oct. 28 with check-in at Fitzgerald’s Irish Pub. After 7 p.m. you get free cover at the participating venues: Fitzgerald’s, Flight, Connolly’s, The Local, SIP, Prohibition, Ri Ra, Roxbury and TILT. Also, wear a costume. $15-$18.

(5) Just dance

Insane Asylum: The dessert bar/dance club Kandy Bar is celebrating with an insane asylum theme at 10 p.m. Oct. 29. 210 E Trade St #342.

Halloween Yacht Party Cruise: Set sail on the Lady of the Lake on Oct. 28 with DJ Zeke playing today’s top 40 hits. Snacks and candy bar included. 10:15 p.m. $30. Queens Landing, 1459 River Hwy, Mooresville.
