A new bakery is opening in uptown this week -- just in time for the holidays
As if Thanksgiving wasn’t already going to be bad enough for our waistlines, now a new bakery is opening in uptown this week. Gateau Baking Company will open in the 7th Street Public Market Wednesday, Nov. 23, just in time for all your Thanksgiving and holiday dessert needs.
The details:
– Gateau (French for “cake”) will replace Cloud 9 Confections in the market.
– Owner Cara Jorgensen launched the baking company earlier this year as an online-only business.
– Gateau bakes cakes, cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts and more, using local ingredients. “Gateau Baking Company fits perfectly into the mission of the 7th Street Public Market,” said Chris Clouden, the market’s executive director. “Cara locally sources all of her ingredients, she only uses natural food dyes from Viva Raw, and she is ready to take the next step to proprietor of a brick-and-mortar shop.”
– Jorgensen originally planned to open a food truck but was approached by Clouden about opening in the market. “Without hesitation, I put the food truck plans to the side to focus on what could potentially be the biggest career move I’ve ever made; something concrete, real, risky, and all mine,” Jorgensen wrote in a blog post.
– In the past Jorgensen had donated 15 percent of all sales to charities. She plans to continue giving back, according to the blog, but it might look different — like encouraging her staff to volunteer, matching employee contributions and offering a monthly charity cupcake.
– Jorgensen said in the blog post that she will continue doing wholesale orders and wedding cakes.
She said it.
“This is the biggest career move I’ve ever made,” Jorgensen said. “I am very excited about this next step and can’t wait for our plans and dreams to come to fruition.”
