Maybe it was the free weekend during the Panthers’ playoff bye or the fact he was preparing to spend time with his family, but quarterback Cam Newton was in a chatty mood Friday.

Newton joked about his newborn son’s name (Chosen) and ended the 20-minute media session with an entertaining riff about what goes on in the Panthers’ offensive huddle.

“It’s pretty interesting,” Newton said. “I think MTV or ESPN should pick that up and just have a GoPro sticking out like it’s a sprinkler system.”

Newton rattled off all of the offensive starters and described each player’s personality in the huddle. (He left out running back Jonathan Stewart, who’s expected to return for the divisional-round game after missing three games with a foot injury.)

What follows is Newton’s description, in his words, of the makeup of the Panthers’ huddle:

“He’ll say a corny joke every now and then, and he has like a 20 to 30 percent chance of making people laugh. But it’s just the thought that counts.”

TE Greg Olsen

“He’s the overseer. He listens to the plays and he’s like, ‘No, no, no, that’s not right. It can’t be even, it has to be odd. I can’t zoom, I can’t motion that way because – no Cam, that’s not right.’”

“He’s just the meditator. The Jerricho that you see scoring the touchdowns is going to be the same Jerricho that you see pregame.”
