Small Business: Melt in Your Mouth serves us something sweet

Julie and Michael Chambers, a mother-and-son team, officially opened Melt in Your Mouth uptown last March. Melt in Your Mouth is a charming little shop that drew me in immediately. Delicious chocolate and vanilla cupcakes are baked fresh each morning. Unique flavors such as Bacon Bourbon, Spiced Rum, Fire Apple and Maple Bacon make return trips a necessity.

Why is Charlotte a great place to start a business?

One word can sum up why the Queen City is a great place to start a business and that word is “community.” Our cupcake business is located in the heart of the city in historic Brevard Court and we get to experience this incredible business and customer community on a daily basis. We love being in a business where we connect with our community with something sweet.

Who has been your biggest influence?

My dad has always been a huge supporter of everything I have done in my life. He always told me that it was never too early or late to chase my dreams. He was our biggest supporter when we were opening the business through the good moments and the stress-filled nights. He was there pushing me and lifting me up. He was always committed to excellence in his personal and business life and I will intend to make him proud and do the same.

How do you begin each morning?

Baking. We make all of our cupcakes fresh each morning.

What do you see in your future?

We love the small intimate nature of our business now and our ability to connect with our customers. But we have plans in the works to open a second location with a unique twist.

Where do you go in Charlotte when you need to chill?

Our laid-back work environment is great and our relationship with employees is more like family and we all love enjoying times together. But when I am away from my work life I often frequent the Wooden Robot in South End and for a nice evening out for music I go to the Double Door Inn.
