Why vegans are gathering for drinks this month

Looking for something different? This monthly meet-up celebrates vegan cuisine.

Charlotte’s vegan community is overwhelmingly positive, which is due, in large part, to the efforts of The Humane League (THL) and their volunteers. The Charlotte vegan community has always felt very disjointed, especially compared to other cities. I’ve been a Charlottean and vegan for just over a decade and had never been able to connect with other vegetarians, so I was beyond excited when I found out about Charlotte Vegan Drinks.

On the third Thursday of every month, The Humane League hosts Charlotte Vegan Drinks, which is a veg meet-up that’s open to all people. And lots of people! Omnivores and herbivores come out each month to hang out over some drinks and great food.

This event, on average, attracts around 50 hungry Charlotteans, but some of the larger events garner upwards of 90 people. Not only is Vegan Drinks a fun way to spend a Thursday evening, but it’s changing the landscape of food in Charlotte.

Owner of The Peculiar Rabbit, Rob Nixon, added vegan items to their permanent menu, where none existed before. “After the event that we hosted here,” Nixon says, “I realized that there was a demand for great plant-based food options and I wanted to make sure we could serve vegans. It only made sense to add vegan options to our menu.”

Event organizer and Charlotte director of The Humane League Maddie Segal says, “We purposefully seek out restaurants that don’t have a lot of vegan options because it makes it more exciting for everybody. The restaurants we’ve worked with so far have been really eager to create new and exciting menu items for the group.”

Segal stresses that everyone is truly welcome: “One of the missions of THL is to create a positive and uplifting community for vegetarians, vegans and the veg-curious. Vegan Drinks is such a great place for people to come learn more about meat reduction. We have people that just come because they are interested in trying Meatless Mondays.”
