It’s like a soda shop, in a mini-bus.
It’s Hart’s Soda Shop, started by husband and wife team, Greg and Kara Urquhart. What began as an idea, has become quite the nostalgic treat for Charlotte residents.
Kara got her inspiration from retro soda shops that used to make their own flavored syrups way before Coke and Pepsi took over. Through research, she’s developed traditional syrups like orange cream and root beer and then cooked up her own concoctions like blueberry basil and strawberry mint. Currently they have about 18 flavors go into rotation based on the season.
Hart’s has also created a full menu of floats and sundaes. My personal favorite is the “You’re Bacon Me Crazy Sundae” which includes two scoops of local vanilla ice cream, candied bacon and caramel sauce.
Once they had the menu, it was time to start working on a mobile kitchen. Greg who has a thing for vintage Volkswagens, found a 1971 VW bus in Winston Salem and since October has worked tirelessly to create what they call The Soda Bus. Now able to travel, the Urquharts are joining local food truck rallies and doing pop-ups around town.
While the ultimate goal is to have a storefront where everyone can enjoy a treat on a spinning stool, Kara says they are having a blast serving Charlotte from their Soda Bus. You can check them out at The Company Store in NoDa on Thursday evenings, Unknown Brewery most Fridays and NoDa Brewing most Saturdays. Otherwise, here are a few dates for upcoming pop-ups below.
