Kate Curran, 27, is owner of LA-based fitness concept CORE•OLOGY. It is located in a renovated mill house on North Davidson Street in NoDa. Don’t be fooled by its welcoming entrance, bright colors and quaint interior – you will get a tough workout.
Curran is serious about what she offers in her boutique fitness shop. Her goal is for clients to create the happiest, healthiest, strongest form and impression of themselves.
The Megaformer, created by Sebastian Lagree, a former body builder, is central to the high-intensity, low-impact, 50-minute classes. The Megaformer is over 10 feet long with stationary and moving parts. Curran said, “It is a full-body workout with slow-controlled movements to fatigue your muscles so (you) can build leaner and stronger muscles.”
Classes are offered every day of the week, with as many as seven per day. Weekday classes start at 5:30 a.m. Two free 30-minute introductory classes are offered each week on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and Sundays at 11:30 a.m. The first class is $15 and various packages are available. If you decide to try it out, check out the smoothie bar located in the back of the house.
I spoke with Curran about CORE•OLOGY for the Entrepreneur Series:
Why is Charlotte a good place to start a business?
Charlotte is an amazing place to start a business. Not only is Charlotte one of the fastest-growing cities, but it also a very active, healthy one. The fitness scene in Charlotte is exploding, and I wanted to be a part of it.
I also wanted to offer Charlotte something new and exciting. I have seen how the Megaformer has transformed my body as well as others, and wanted Charlotte residents to experience the hardest workout of their life in the safest, (most) efficient way possible.
Who has been your biggest influence?
Hands down, my fiancé and business partner Chase Colston. He was the one that made my vision become a reality by inspiring me. His patience and “never give up” attitude has always encouraged me to be a better, stronger person.
How do you begin each day?
I think the perfect way to start a day is to do something for you. If I am not coaching, I jump into the first workout class I can. Not only is it a huge stress reliever, but I am ready to take on the day after having me time.
What do you see in your future?
My business partner and I invested our business here in NoDa knowing what the next 12-24 months would bring to NoDa with the expansion, development and light rail. We are excited about the upcoming opportunities to grow with other small business, meet new people and to eventually become a staple in NoDa for the fitness community.
Where do you go in Charlotte when you need to chill?
I am a big foodie at heart and wine connoisseur. I love trying new places, but you can usually find me at Soul Gastrolounge, Capital Grille, Davidson (Street) Public House and Kid Cashew.
