Kaitlin and Jonathan’s Love Story, Part I: The Engagement

This is the first of a three-part series about Kaitlin and Jonathan’s Love Story. Check back Wednesday and Friday for the second and third parts.

When Kaitlin Carswell finally agreed to go on a walk with boyfriend Jonathan Bensch, exhausted (just home from a trip), cranky (recovering from a stomach bug), and dressed down (the condo’s power was out), she definitely was not expecting a proposal.

But Jonathan had a time crunch, hoping to propose while Kaitlin’s family members were still in town. He dropped to one knee in Freedom Park, and the whole family toasted that night to Kaitlin’s “yes.”

Kaitlin is a fourth grade teacher and Jonathan works at Bank of America.

They met in the fall of 2007 at UNC Charlotte at one of Jonathan’s fraternity events.

“Jonathan is patient and laid back, while I am a planner and super organized,” Kaitlin wrote on the couple’s wedding website. “He keeps me grounded and I keep him in line.”

They had been dating for six years when Jonathan finally popped the question in 2013, and they would get married a year later.

But a month before the wedding, the family was hit with hard news: Kaitlin’s father was diagnosed with cancer. All family and friends could do to pray for a miracle.
