This is the second of a three-part series about Kaitlin and Jonathan’s Love Story. Check back Friday for the third part. Missed part one? View it here.
A year after Kaitlin Carswell and Jonathan Bensch were engaged, their families were looking for a miracle. Kaitlin’s father was diagnosed with cancer and was hit with complications resulting from an immediate surgery.
They were counting down one month before the wedding, which they wanted to be traditional, and black and white.
Then, the news came: Kaitlin’s father would be able to leave the hospital for several hours to join the wedding party.
The pair was married at the bride’s hometown church followed by a traditional reception at Lake Hickory Country Club. Kaitlin and Jonathan chose a very special weekend for their marriage. “My parents were married on June 26, 31 years before our wedding, Jonathan’s parents were married on June 27, 33 years before, and Jonathan and I were married on June 28,” Kaitlin said. “We all got married on the same weekend!”
As her mother pushed her father down the aisle in a wheelchair, Kaitlin was overwhelmed with emotion.
“We asked the congregation to remain seated as I walked down the aisle, so that everyone could see my father in his wheelchair, and so I could see Jonathan’s face,” Kaitlin said.
She added, “It’s so easy to get caught up in all the tiny wedding details, but when my father got sick, everything was put into perspective. Nothing else mattered at that moment except that I was getting married, surrounded by my whole family.”
Her father’s health still hung in the balance, and her honeymoon was on the horizon. Not to mention the reception.
