Aug. 27: LGBT supporters endorse city council candidates

Yesterday, Equality NC, MeckPAC and the Human Rights Campaign hosted a news conference to announce their support for LGBT-friendly at-large city council candidates slotted for the Sept. 15 primary — as well as their willingness to funnel time and money into backing those candidates.

The groups endorsed four Democratic candidates: Incumbent Vi Lyles, Julie Eiselt and former council members Billy Maddalon and James Mitchell.

LOCAL CONNECTION TO SLAYINGS: The photographer and reporter killed during a live broadcast in Virginia yesterday both had N.C. ties. Reporter Alison Parker previously worked for a station in New Bern. Photographer Adam Ward was planning to move to Charlotte with his wife, who had recently accepted a job at WSOC. The suspected gunman, Vester Lee Flanagan, died yesterday after shooting himself.

MORE PIZZA? Yep. Pizza Peel, Pure Pizza, Benny Pennello’s, Pizzeria Omaggio — and on — are not enough. Marco’s Pizza, an Ohio-based pizza chain, is pushing its way in with plans to expand into Charlotte. New locations in N.C. are already being developed in Burlington and Clayton.

Think you have what it takes to crush a whole 28″ pie in under 2 hours? If you complete the Benny’s challenge, you get a free pie, t-shirt, public recognition, and bragging rights.
