#C5Underground: Get a sneak peek of Plaza Midwood’s first brewery - Legion Brewing (SOLD OUT)
Plaza Midwood has a lot: Cool restaurants, unique bars, a record shop and a Dairy Queen. And now it has its own brewery.
Legion Brewing plans to open on Commonwealth Avenue later this month, and, because y’all are the best, we’re giving you the chance to see the brewery and taste the beer before Legion opens to the public.
(UPDATE: The #C5Underground event has already sold out. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets! You can still scroll down to see photos of the inside and learn about the brewery.)
We’ll be hosting the next #C5Underground event Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Legion Brewing (1906 Commonwealth Avenue, Charlotte). Get your tickets here. We’re only selling 100, so get on it!

About Legion Brewing
Buchy has been homebrewing since the late ’90s, and started thinking about opening his own brewery in 2005. After a few false starts, he met Newton last year through church and things took off from there.
Legion will start with about 12 beers, but there are enough taps for 20 beers in the taproom. Buchy will focus on farmhouse beers with local ingredients. Right now, he’s brewing everything from a lager to a wit to a stout to an IPA.
The name refers to Buchy’s legion of friends and family who supported him as he kept trying to open a brewery.
“I’ve had a legion of friends behind me,” he told C5 in October. “That’s where the name comes from and that’s what finally got us here.”
Legion’s home is the old Brodt Music Company building, and there are references to the building’s musical history in the taproom, including a piano on one wall.
Rustic, beautiful wood touches fill the taproom including wood slats on the ceiling and a natural wood bar with wood designs on the front. (Buchy has a construction background.)
Buchy and Craver want Legion to have a neighborhood-pub feel in Plaza Midwood, a neighborhood that Buchy really wanted to be in.
“The neighborhood is unique. … It’s not a generic neighborhood,” he told me. “It’s fun to be a part of that and bring our own quirkiness to the weird neighborhood that’s here already.”
And you’ve gotta love this view of uptown.
