2.23 miles for Maud: Charlotte breweries, running clubs honor the memory of Ahmaud Arbery
Breweries and running clubs in the Charlotte area — and across North Carolina — will honor Ahmaud Arbery’s memory by participating in Together We Stand’s Second Annual Maud 2.23 event. The statewide series of runs will commemorate Arbery’s death on Feb. 23, 2020, when the 25-year-old Black man was murdered while running in his Brunswick, Georgia, neighborhood.
Who is involved: Together We Stand’s founder Tyrone Irby started the memorial run for Arbery in 2021. The event is presented by Together We Stand NC, CEP, RunCLTRun HOKA, Fleet Feet and Omega Sports.
Twenty-two running clubs and breweries — including NoDa Brewing Company, Mad Miles Run Club , Wooden Robot Brewery and more — joined the initiative, with runs scheduled in Charlotte, Pineville, Wilmington, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro and more.
Who benefits: A portion of proceeds from the event will support Charlotte’s Running Works, Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Building Hope in Greenville and the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Greensboro.
What to expect: Registration is from 11 a.m.-noon. on Feb. 20. Courageous Conversations will commence after the kickoff. The conversation, titled The Language of Racism, will create a space for participants to communicate by listening to one another’s perspectives and experiences.
Where: Participants can run at any venue (or any place). If you can’t run in-person, there’s an option to register for a virtual run.
How many miles? Most runs are 2.23 miles. Check the individual run for details.
