Things to do

Go do something fun this Memorial Day weekend

Go nuts during this long weekend. Sit, walk, run, drink a beer. These days are yours.

Pre Memorial Day

– Events surrounding NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 are in full swing Saturday and Sunday. See the full schedule and be sure to say “Hey” to the mayor of the Turn 4 Family Campground.

– Speed Street, which may be disrupting morning commutes uptown, continues Friday and Saturday with thrills such as: a hot dog eating contest, a Q&A with Coca-Cola Racing Family Drivers Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman, and concerts by Corey Smith and Craig Wayne Boyd, winner of The Voice.

– Eat and drink for all you’re worth during Tour De Food at Metropolitan and down the adjacent greenway on Saturday. Participating restaurants include Maharani, Vivace and La Paz.

– Be smooth and listen to free jazz at Romare Bearden Park Saturday night. The Bearden Music Series continues! Brink a blanket.

Fifth-Annual Memorial Day Celebration on Sunday at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. It starts with a trail race, continues with a performance by the Packway Handle Band and ends with a fireworks show.

– Catch some lacrosse action at the Charlotte Hounds home game against the Boston Cannons 7 p.m. Saturday. Get there early to tailgate, stay after to watch fireworks and get autographs.

On Memorial Day

– Don’t be hungover. Former Carolina Panther Steve Smith wants the Charlotte region to go for a jog. He is hosting the Lace Up Son 5K to benefit the Steve Smith Family Foundation. The organization supports the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of the community.

– Really, don’t be hungover. Patriot Charities is hosting a 5K as well at Symphony Park. The kicker? You can pick the Go The Extra Mile Option and run one more mile in addition to the 5K route to honor veterans. Don’t miss the festival at the end.

– The Charlotte Knights will host a Military Appreciation game on Memorial Day. Veterans from past wars will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and the Knights will wear special military jerseys. Also, $1 hot dogs.

– Remind yourself what Memorial Day is all about: Remember the lives lost in service to America. Check out these Charlotte-area Memorial Day events, such as a Veterans Council program and a cemetery salute.
