Things to do

‘The Taming’ is the political satire you need to see on inauguration night

Back in 2005, Donna Scott Productions debuted its first production, “The Body Chronicles,” which used humor to address how women feel about their bodies, and the lengths they go to look a certain way. Twelve years later Donna Scott is still at it, using theater — and a little bit of humor — to address serious topics with her Charlotte-based theatre and arts production company.

On Friday, after Donald Trump is sworn in as president, Donna Scott Productions will be one of many theater companies across the country hosting a staged reading of “The Taming,” a “wickedly funny” political satire written by Lauren Gunderson.

The staged reading is 7-9:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Art League (1517 Camden Road, Charlotte) and it’s free. Register here.

Actor and producer Donna Scott joined us on the CharlotteFive Podcast this week to talk about “The Taming,” Charlotte’s theater scene, art’s role in addressing social issues and more.

Donna Scott Productions put on a full production of “The Taming” in early 2016, but Scott said it was important to be a part of this inauguration night reading because she wanted people to know that DSP would still be there, working hard and fighting for causes it believes in no matter who’s in the White House. That’s also the inspiration behind the #wontbetamed hashtag, which you may have seen floating around social media recently.

On the podcast, you’ll hear Scott explain why it’s important for her and DSP to be involved in the community and produce works that deal with important social issues.

Other things Scott talked about on the podcast this week:

– The “happy accident” that led to Scott quitting her job and becoming an actor and theater producer.

– The theater scene in Charlotte, and what it’s like to run a smaller theater company in the city.

– The DSP Women Entrepreneurs in Business and Arts Speaker Series (the next one is Monday with Rosie Molinary).

– And other exciting things DSP has coming up in 2017.

Also this week, we had a special guest in the C5 Podcast for the first half of the show. In the spirit of New Year’s resolutions and fresh starts many of us try to make in January, we had Chad Martin on to talk about his decision to drop everything and move from Charlotte to Miami — a place he’d always wanted to live. He signed a lease on an apartment before he even had a job lined up, and also decided to start learning a foreign language and take cooking classes.

We hope his story will inspire you to finally do that thing you’ve been putting off for months.
