3 visual arts happenings you should check out this week
Grace Cote, Lia Newman and Kati Stegall offer a to-do list on immersing yourself in visual arts around town. Newman is director/curator of the Van Every/Smith Galleries at Davidson College, Cote is senior coordinator at Jerald Melberg Gallery, Stegall is Art-in-Transit program administrator at the Charlotte Area Transit System, and they collaborate on the blog HappeningsCLT.
Where to go
CPCC’s Ross Gallery offers photographer and innovator Amy Herman’s solo exhibition, “It wasn’t important until it was”: Photographs of projections of family photos during the construction of Herman’s own home. They explore how technology constructs false senses of interaction between reality, time and memory. The exhibition runs Aug. 15-Oct. 9, with an opening reception Sept. 8 and artist talk Sept. 15.
What to do
Submit your own art for the Sept. 2 “DaDa Soiree: An Absurd Art Show,” produced by Charlotte Art Chat. Often misunderstood, DaDa was a conceptual art movement that begin in post-WWI Europe – performance, painting, poetry, photography, sculpture – and strove to identify and critique the absurd practices and sensibilities of materialistic middle-class society. Work can be submitted, by Aug. 19, to dadaartsubmit@gmail.com; include artist’s name, title of work, media, brief description, and up to five images.
What to see
Janet Echelman’s “Where We Met,” in Greensboro’s new LeBauer Park, is one of the internationally renowned public artist’s large ephemeral net sculptures. With it, Greensboro joins a list of cities that includes London, Prague, Boston, Montreal, Seattle, Phoenix and Denver. This work, inspired by the textile industry, was funded by the Public Art Endowment, a permanent fund through The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. Since 2009, it’s provided eight art installations for the city by major public artists.
