The #C5Checklist: 5 things you must do Sept. 12-16
It’s the start of a new week — and a new list of tastes and activities to try around town.
(1) Ride your bike to get ice cream.
I love how Karin, a mom in SouthPark, wrote recently about her dream that her kids will join the ranks of commuter cyclists in Charlotte. For starters, they ride their bikes to Ben & Jerry’s in their neighborhood sphere. Live in SouthPark? Bike to Ben & Jerry’s on Fairview Road. Then there are options like Golden Cow Creamery on Summit Avenue for SouthEnd residents, Two Scoops Creamery on Central Avenue for Plaza Midwood/NoDa residents and Marble Slab Creamery on Rea Road for south Charlotte residents.

(2) Grab a coffee from Hyde Brewing.
Remember the magic of The Daily Press that once operated in NoDa? The shop’s owner, Lindsey Pitman, is now a partner with Hyde Brewing. And she’s busy brewing coffees and teas at a pop-up shop in a corner of the Goodyear Arts building at 516 N. College St. — until Hyde Brewing opens its coffee bar/culinary cafe/brewery concept in South End in 2017.

(3) Make your own pour over coffee.
Don’t be scared. We have a tutorial. Also don’t forget to try beans from local roasters like Pure Intentions Coffee, Enderly Coffee, Magnolia Coffee and Dilworth Coffee.
(4) Browse the shelves of an independent bookstore.
Yep, Charlotte’s got them. To start, there’s Park Road Books (with couches to plop down in), Julia’s Cafe & Books (which helps fund Habitat for Humanity’s Affordable Housing Program), and The Last Word (which, has, in addition to books, vinyl records, DVDs, CDs, video games and board games).
(5) Pop into an art exhibit.
Daniel Coston’s “On the Way to Here: Adventures in Photography, Music and Life” gives life to prominent and historic music venues that have closed or are closing. This is a continuing exhibition at the Charlotte Museum of History. McColl Center for Art + Innovation just debuted “Shared Space: A New Era / Photographs from the Bank of America Collection,” which will be on view through Nov. 5. You can always wander into Dilworth Artisan Station as well, where dozens of artists maintain studio space.
Refresh your brain with some creativity, people.
