Over the last few years, Charlotte has experienced a lot of growth in the live music scene. Older venues have been renovated, new venues have popped up, and there are more options and more variety than ever before. Here’s a breakdown of Charlotte music venues, listed in no particular order at all.

(1) Tremont Music Hall – South End
Lowdown: Two stages, one holds about 1000, the other about 500. Grungy, dark. Saw lots of great shows here in high school.

(2) Visulite Theatre – Elizabeth
Lowdown: Small venue, crowd always fun, lots of variety in shows, great selection at bar.

(3) Neighborhood Theatre – NoDa
Notable Upcoming Shows: Pharmakon 2/1, Shovels & Rope 2/6 SOLD OUT, Donna the Buffalo 2/27, Ben Frost 3/23

(4) The Evening Muse – NoDa
Lowdown: Most intimate venue in Charlotte, great acoustic shows, feels like the band or performer is playing just for you. A handful of larger artists played here the first time they played in Charlotte. Seems to be a rite of passage.

Lowdown: Opened in 1969, feels like a house you may have partied in when you were in college. Has an interesting smell. Fun. Lots of history.

(6) Amos’ Southend – South End
Lowdown: Can be very crowded and feels more packed than other area venues, big bars, lots of tribute and cover bands.

(7) Coyote Joe’s – Near the airport
Lowdown: Country acts big and small, remember to bring cash, great place for a grimy makeout session.

(8) Snug Harbor – Plaza Midwood
Lowdown: Fun place to go regardless of show, one of the better outdoor bars and patios in Charlotte (it’s in the back), something for everyone (shows, karaoke, hip-hop night, country night, drag shows).

(9) The Fillmore – NC Music Factory
Lowdown: Tons of huge acts. Big, clean, has five bars (and sometimes an outdoor bar) and cool chandeliers. More pricey than other venues in town, but quality of performers is unmatched.

(10) The Chop Shop – NoDa
Lowdown: Newer venue, pool tables and chill area out front if you’re not feeling the music, bar and bathrooms are tucked away from main stage (no one blocks stage while ordering a drink, no bathroom lines interrupting show—HUGE).

(11) Double Door Inn – Elizabeth
Lowdown: Classic venue in an old house, established in 1973, claims to be the “Oldest Live Music Venue East of the Mississippi,” home to plenty of famous names over the years, cheap beer.
