The only thing Charlotteans may like to indulge in more than craft beer is a perfect bite of food. In the second entry to our Scene/Seen photo essay series, we sent our photographer to capture what it looks like to take part in a delicious tradition: Food Truck Friday in South End.
Here is what it looked like between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. last Friday. Were you caught talking with your mouth full? Maybe not, but it’s probably worth checking out the photos to make sure.
The empty lot located across from Phat Burrito is deserted on most days. But the sizable crowd here is typical for a Friday when a caravan of kitchens on wheels circles its proverbial wagons. Free smells abound.
The beauty of the whole set up is twofold. First, you get to avoid the restaurant formalities while still enjoying restaurant quality (or better) meals. Secondly, the sheer amount of cuisine choices favors the adventurous eater and the play-it-safe-nibbler alike.
It’s BYOC, by the way—bring your own chair, or even a blanket if you feel a picnic situation coming on. The tables provided are few and far between.
The soft serve truck is a hub for those needing to cool off. Thankfully, this ice cream truck doesn’t play music, at least while we were there. It just pushes out cake cone after cake cone of creamy, swirled deliciousness — with or without sprinkles.
What’s better than eating a variety of dishes under a Carolina blue sky? Doing it with a cold beverage.
Police officers patrolling the event don’t cite people for having open containers as long as they stay within the bounds of the food truck corral. Forget to bring drinks? Head across the lot to Common Market.
One drawback of having all these popular food trucks in one place is the wait times in line can get excessive.
The most patient queues were in front of the Tin Kitchen, recently featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” and Papi Queso Truck, purveyor of the comfort food miracle that is the Pig Mac — a grilled cheese with macaroni and pulled pork layered inside.
Be sure to partake in some food truck fare this Friday. What better way could there be to end another successful week than by being face-deep in some local noshes?
