The Unknown Brewing Co. will create the world’s first* super collaboration Saturday

OK, we’re not absolutely certain that this is actually the first of its kind in the world, but Unknown Brewing is calling it that — and doing something fun first definitely falls in line with the personality of owner/head brewer Brad Shell.

(You may recall when the brewery attempted to break a Guinness World Record by having the Most Jumping High Fives at Once at its one-year anniversary party.*)

This weekend, the brewery is creating a “Supermegaultra Collaboration.” Oh, you don’t know what supermegaultra means? Allow me to explain: 80 local home brewers, including the Carolina BrewMasters, will descend on the brewery Saturday morning. All day long they will brew the same malt recipe however they choose. Then, once they’re ready, it will all be combined and brewed together in one of Unknown’s tanks.

“We have about 80 brewers in the brewery using their own systems, all brewing the same malt recipe, but using different hops,” Shell said. “This IPA is going to have up to 270 hop additions. All of the batches are blended together into one fermenter and then canned for our local market.”

The IPA will be called Garage Warrior and will be available in 16-oz. cans in mid-October at local retailers, with portions of the proceeds going to charities for the Carolina BrewMasters. How this beer will turn out is still up for debate.

“This has never been done,” Shell said. “It’s either going to be really good, or the opposite.”

Regardless of the final product’s flavor, Saturday promises a good time at the brewery. The South End taproom will be open and you’ll have a chance to check out the brewers in action with your own brew in hand. Plus, there will be live music and several food trucks on site throughout the afternoon and evening.
