Buy socks, sip some beverages or get your unibrow threaded. Ways to #GoPink in October
The biggest show of pink that I see in Charlotte each year is Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure. Last year, more than 13,000 people registered for this race. This year’s run takes place Oct. 3 to raise funds for Susan G. Komen Charlotte, which invests 75 percent of funds raised to support local breast health services, and contributes 25 percent to national research for a breast-cancer cure.
If you’re running around uptown (the race starts at Marshall Park), look out for the Pounding for Pink race team led by the Panthers and Belk. The team will be hosting an Energy Station on the course that features the PurrCussion drumline and “energizers” to jazz up participants.
This race isn’t your only chance to contribute to the fight against breast cancer this month during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is serious: This year, 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in American women. But I admire the way Charlotte groups infuse the cancer-fighting cause with fun.
Ways to #gopink this October:
Indulge in a pint at the new NoDa Brewing.
Sip in Pink Pint Night Oct. 1. Proceeds from the pink brew will benefit Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund at Levine Cancer Institute from 4-8:30 p.m. So… work ends early?
Buy some socks.
Who doesn’t need more meaningful foot garb? Bar Method is selling sporty socks with $2 per pair going back to Susan G. Komen.

Gorge on chocolate.
The Chocolate for a Cure cocktail reception and program is heavy on the chocolate. Stop by The Foundation For The Carolinas from 6-10 p.m. on Oct. 3.
Go for a stroll.
The Making Strides walk at 9 a.m. on Oct. 17 raises funds for the American Cancer Society’s fight against breast cancer. The Panthers will be hosting yet another Energy Station on this course, which starts at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Don’t forget to stretch first.
Watch football.
Going to the Panthers game at Bank of America Stadium on Oct. 25? You can grab one of the 73,000 pink ribbons that Zeta Tau Alpha volunteers hand out to fans before the game. And during halftime, you can spot two giant pink banners held by people who have been affected by breast cancer, while American Idol season 12 winner Candace Glover performs. Cheer.
Shop with the pink people.
Charlotte Radiology’s “1-in-8 Pink Ladies” will be displayed in the JLC WearHouse storefront this month. The mannequins are dressed in full body suits (seven pink and one white) to symbolize how one in eight women will develop breast cancer. Shoppers will have access to information about breast health, plus an educational event Oct. 24.
You are also invited to help turn the WearHouse pink.
Get pampered.
Get your unibrow threaded, your mustache or your legs waxed, or your skin treated to a facial. Idolize Brows & Beauty is donating 5 percent of each purchase this month to the Susan G. Komen.
Sip an adult beverage in Ballantyne.
Throughout the month, The Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge will offer drink specials that support Ballantyne Country Club’s BCC Rally for the Cure, which benefits Susan G. Komen. Veranda, the lobby bar, and Gallery Restaurant will serve Pink Passion Sangria for $10, as well as glasses and bottles of rosé.
If you prefer delicately stuffing your face with dessert, the Veranda is selling boxes of assorted pink macarons for $10 and Gallery Restaurant is serving samples of a Pink Passion Delice dessert special for $8. Ten percent of proceeds goes to BCC Rally.
How will you go pink?
