“Miami Connection”: Have a bonkers night at the movies tonight
Are you a total MISTie, or do you wonder what the heck that is? For the latter group, this is what fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 are known as.
MST3k (for short) was a one-of-a-kind show about a guy drifting through space forced to watch bad movies with only his robot friends for company. It featured the “shadowrama” effect of a row of theater seats in silhouette at the bottom of the screen while they made fun of low-budget, sci-fi wonders. The premise is silly, but it garnered critical acclaim, a Peabody award and a cult of fans many franchises dream about.
The original show has been off the air for some time, but RiffTrax is a new incarnation and it takes on even more of the terrible monster movies of yore alongside more modern cinematic flops (“Anaconda,” “The Room” and “Sharknado,” to name a few). And it’s coming to two Charlotte-area theaters (Stonecrest and Concord Mills) tonight.

The format is a little different, as the silhouettes are gone and the jokes are current, but the idea remains the same. A few times a year, they host live broadcast events in theaters across the country.
Reasons to not miss it:
– The movie RiffTrax is riffing in Charlotte is “Miami Connection.” This rad ’80s film is hilariously bad, but it also seems to have a good deal of heart amidst the madness. In fact, it’s been called one of the best bad movies ever made. It involves ninjas on motorcycles, a “martial arts rock band” called Dragon Sound, and a guy that kind of looks like Chuck Norris peddling what else but drugs. How could that disappoint?
– These events prompt the most laughing you will do at the movies, and are well worth the regular ticket price.
– You can get out and mingle with other fans and have that ever-elusive shared experience. Some people even dress up in costume or bring their own robots and props.
– Halloween is almost here and it’s time to welcome a little kookiness into your life.
– The real beauty of these events is that, while the films often do embarrass themselves, the commentary adds another layer and elevates it to a new experience. It takes out the fangs and reminds us all we don’t have to take everything so seriously.
