Charlotte, it’s time to put on your favorite mask and most comfortable shoes. You’ve got some scavenging to do.

How well do you know your city? You’re about to find out.

HERE’S THE DEAL: Mark your calendar for Aug. 17-23 for a fun, social distancing-friendly activity — perfect during the COVID Summer of 2020.

Then follow the CLT Scavenger Hunt Instagram account. Participating Charlotte brands will post a clue to the account’s stories each morning at 10 a.m. beginning Monday.

Clues will be in the form of a quote and a picture. Interpret the clue, then go to the location and search.

The first to arrive will get a free daily prize. It’s that easy.

The next day, the location will change and a new clue will be posted, again at 10 a.m. There will be one location/prize per day.

Daily prizes will be in the $50 ballpark, with a grand prize for the final day, valued at more than $500.

WHO IS PARTICIPATING? Well, it’s complicated. We can tell you some of the local businesses, but we can’t tell you all of them — you’ll see why when you get your clues. For now, here are some of the 14 businesses currently involved:

WHY A SCAVENGER HUNT? “We had the idea a few weeks ago, when we got together with a few other CLT brands with the hope of doing something fun to allow people to (safely!) enjoy the city and show their favorite local business some love,” Jules & Vetiver Fine Fragrance owner Katrina Sellers, one of the organizers, told CharlotteFive. “The hunt will challenge people’s knowledge of some of the city’s best restaurants, shops, and other points of interest, while picking up awesome prizes along the way.”

The timing couldn’t be better. “It’s been a rollercoaster of a year for everyone, so we’re all just delighted to be creating something that can bring some levity back to daily life,” Sellers said. “And if there’s anything I’ve personally learned in the last few months, it’s that finding creative, new ways of having fun and showing support for small businesses are two really important things. Hopefully, the CLT Scavenger Hunt can do both.”

WHAT ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, scavenger hunters are all required to wear masks and also follow safety protocols at all locations.
