You can now walk on the Hawthorne bridge to get your Instagrammable skyline shots
We know what you’re thinking: Fake news. No way is the Hawthorne Lane bridge open, not after all these years.
But it actually sorta is.
On Wednesday, the city announced that the now-infamous bridge is open for pedestrians and cyclists. There is a caveat — it may shut back down temporarily for continued repairs, the city posted on Twitter.
The bridge is being rebuilt for the Gold Line streetcar extension. It closed in mid-2017 and it should have been open already, but street girder issues happened. Then Charlotte Area Transit Center officials said there was a materials issue, a work schedules issue, a holiday issue, a special events issue — oh, and a weather issue.
But here we are. Sorry drivers, but this is a score for cyclists, pedestrians — and photo enthusiasts.
So get dressed like you haven’t been in a months-long quarantine, grab your Instagram husband and go pose in front of the skyline before the cars are allowed back on to ruin the whole view.
Pro tip: there is a chain-link fence, so you might have to get creative with angles.
