There’s a new spot just outside of Charlotte where you can kick back, make a wreath or a floral centerpiece and have a drink while chatting with friends — The Flower Bar in Rock Hill.

It all started as an interactive flower shop. Co-owner Melissa Frotten had spent years as a floral designer, but COVID-19 put a dent in events. And she didn’t want an average flower shop with teddy bears and balloons — she wanted something more like the “group therapy” sessions she’d held for years with girlfriends out in her garage, playing around with flowers.

Her husband, Rob, eventually talked her into opening The Flower Bar, and they added beer and wine sales over the summer.

We figured “if we put a bar in here, we’d give people a reason to hang out and socialize and a reason to stay. We created an experience,” Melissa said.

The concept is growing, too. The Frottens are already working on expanding into Fort Mill, Lake Wylie and Spartanburg — all at once.

“We’re absolutely insane,” Rob said. “We decided someone is going to steal this idea eventually … so we needed to do it now and get a foothold on this market. “

So, how does it work? You can just pop in for a drink at the bar. You can also set up a private work of six or more for a girls night out, birthday party, engagement party or other occasion. (You can even order a flower arrangement to pick up, too.)

The cost: Workshop prices can vary from $30 to $150 per person, depending on what you want to build. When you book a private event, the staff will work with you to find a project with materials that fits your budget.

The drinks: The Flower Bar is best known for its wine slushies. You pick a base of red, white or rose, then choose a fruit and add-ins such as mint, basil or hibiscus. Other options include wine by the glass, wine margaritas, beer and Prosecco pops flavored with pineapple, blueberry pomegranate and other fruit.

The food: There’s no kitchen, but outside food is welcome. Charcuterie boxes are available, and there’s also menus on hand from nearby restaurants that deliver. Food truck partnerships sometimes happen, too.
