Juneteenth 2022: Where to celebrate the holiday around Charlotte this month

Juneteenth, a holiday celebrated around the country on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

On that day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure all slaves were freed.

Today, hundreds of thousands of people celebrate the holiday with festivals, picnics and family gatherings that center around African American freedom, education and achievement.

Here are a few Juneteenth events scheduled in Charlotte later this month:

Charlotte Juneteenth Celebration: Past. Present. Future.

Location: Rendezvous 704, 619 Anderson St., Charlotte, NC 28205

Neighborhood: NoDa

When: June 17, 12-8 p.m.; June 18, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; June 19, 12-6 p.m.

What to know: Start the holiday off right with an art walk, fashion show, networking seminar and live entertainment hosted by Juneteenth Charlotte. Each registered guest will be entered into a drawing for raffle prizes, perks and early access to ticketed events.

Cost: Most events will be free to the public, but some will be ticketed. Register online.

Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas

Location: The House of Africa, 1215 Thomas Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205

Neighborhood: Plaza Midwood

When: June 16, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; June 17, 5-9 p.m.; June 18, 12-10 p.m.; June 19, 12-9 p.m.

What to know: This four-day event will include a talent show, drum circle, freedom march, craft workshops, African dance performances and more.

Cost: Free

Juneteenth Jam at Victoria Yards

Location: Victoria Yards, 209 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28202

Neighborhood: Uptown

When: June 17, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.; June 18, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

What to know: The two-day event will feature interactive Afro-Brazilian dance workshops, live music from Charlotte recording artists, BIPOC-owned small business vendors, speakers and food trucks.

Cost: Free

Juneteenth Freedom Walk

Location: Clover Chapel United Methodist Church, 405 Kings Mountain St., Clover, SC 29710

Neighborhood: Clover

When: June 18, 9:30 a.m.

What to know: Celebrate freedom in Clover at its 3rd annual Juneteenth Freedom Walk. A small celebration will be held after the walk.

Cost: $10. Register online.

Juneteenth on the Corridor

Location: Senior Drive, Charlotte, NC 28216

Neighborhood: West End

When: June 18, 12-7 p.m.

What to know: Celebrate the holiday with your family and enjoy performances from African dancers and Black musicians. The event will also include voter registration and education, activities for children and health screenings.

Cost: Free. Register online.

Remember the Ancestors: A Night of Jazz

Location: The Clebourne House, 138 Clebourne St., Fort Mill, SC 29715

Neighborhood: Fort Mill

When: June 18, 6-11 p.m.

What to know: The night of jazz will feature performances from renowned jazz musicians Julian Vaughn and Shableek, and food provided by Fish Market Bar & Grill. A percentage of the proceeds from the event will go to the Melanin Parks Foundation, a nonprofit that provides wellness, education, financial literacy and outdoor programs for children.

Cost: $90-$157. Purchase tickets online.

Durag Festival

Location: Camp North End, 1824 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205

Neighborhood: NoDa

When: June 18, 1-10 p.m.

What to know: Entertainment will include a vendor market, food court, day party, concert and outdoor bar. Guests are encouraged to wear their best durags.

Cost: General admission is free, and tickets to the party and concert are $30. Tickets can be purchased online.

Juneteenth Celebration: Elements of Freedom

Location: Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture, 551 S. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202

Neighborhood: Uptown

When: June 19, 12:30-5 p.m.

What to know: Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the elements of freedom through a hands-on art workshop, community conversation on what freedom means in the modern era, and a live performance from Quentin Talley and The Soul Providers.

Cost: Free. Register online.

Juneteenth Kickoff Carnival

Location: Camp North End, 1774 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, NC 28206

Neighborhood: NoDa

When: Oct. 21

What to know: Entertainment will include a petting zoo, Ferris wheel and Black-owned food trucks. The carnival, which was originally scheduled for June 19, is first in the lineup of events leading up to the BayHaven Food and Wine Festival.

Cost: Tickets will go on sale on June 19 at bayhavenfoodandwine.com. Tickets purchased for the June event will be refunded through Eventbrite.
