‘There’s nothing like this’: Selfie museum reopens in uptown Charlotte

Charlotte is a city with dozens of photo-worthy spots, but there’s a new spot in town to take your social media pics to the next level.

A popular attraction in uptown Charlotte — centered all around you— is back in a new location after closing during the beginning of the pandemic.

Portal CLT, one of Charlotte’s first selfie museums, is an interactive art gallery designed as a “picture playground” for you to shoot creative photos and videos.

Portal CLT is located in Queen City Quarter at 210 E Trade Street Suite B126.

The studio originally opened in 2019, but closed after less than a year of its opening in March 2020 because of the pandemic. Now, Portal CLT has returned in a new space at Queen City Quarter, the space formerly known as the Epicentre, with new picture-perfect rooms.

“There’s nothing like this,” owner Carole Hall told CharlotteFive. “It’s more than just a selfie studio … it’s all interactive and it’s more of a photo shoot.”

Portal CLT has 15 rooms and over 100 photo opportunities.

15 rooms. Over 100 photo ops.

The entire studio is made up of uniquely designed mini-rooms, like the Money room, Sideways room or Graffiti wall, that will be recreated every six months.

Whether you want to use the studio’s props, including boas, hats and sunglasses, or rely on the beautiful backgrounds of each room, the possibilities are endless at Portal CLT.

Some of the rooms will also soon be designed by local artists from the area. Hall says she is currently looking to collaborate with local artists for the next rotation of installations. Anyone interested in working with the Portal CLT team can email portal123clt@gmail.com.
