Durham was named one of the nation’s most underrated travel destinations.

North Carolina’s fourth-largest city was among several locations named by a CNN Travel rankings list.

“Few American cities have experienced a more dramatic turnaround over the past 15 years,” travel writer Joe Yogerst wrote. “From its days as a tobacco factory town, Durham has evolved into a science, art, sports and entertainment hub that revolves around a reenergized downtown and reimagined American Tobacco Campus.”

The American Tobacco Campus, a revitalized former tobacco factory, features many dining and retail options, as well as thousands of square feet of event space, according to its website.

The city is home to the Durham Bulls, which was referred to as “the nation’s most famous minor league team.” The team often plays its games in front of sold-out crowds at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown.

Tourists can also explore natural forest habitats at the Duke Lemur Center, where some of the rarest mammals on the planet live, Yogerst wrote, and beer lovers can check out some of the craft breweries in the city.

Other locations featured on the list include Kansas City, Missouri; Tacoma, Washington; North Park, Colorado; and San Luis Obispo, California.
