New bars and restaurants have opened since the last time you visited Black Mountain
If you haven’t been to Black Mountain (which calls itself the Best Little Beer Town) since last year’s fall season in the North Carolina mountains, there are a few things to catch up on.
The town 115 miles from Charlotte has several new restaurants and bars that have recently opened or are opening soon. Here’s a quick list:
NOW OPEN:
The Bell Tower Black Mountain
Location: 102 Church St, Black Mountain, NC 28711
What to know:
- The Bell Tower Black Mountain is a rooftop bar that opened in July above Open Oven Brunch and Bakery. Open Oven’s owners originally built the space to serve as overflow outdoor seating during brunch but then decided to create an evening rooftop space.
- The bar serves craft cocktails, mocktails, local beer, wine, small plates and desserts.
- During the winter months, The Bell Tower Black Mountain offers a five-course dinner series called Open Oven After Dark. Space is limited, and tickets should be purchased in advance. The first event will be Nov. 18-19. Check Bell Tower’s social media pages for details, which have not yet been released.
Foothills Grange
Location: 120 Broadway Ave, Black Mountain, NC 28711
What to know:
- Foothills Grange has a large outdoor space that seats 250, including a patio and covered picnic tables.
- A kids’ play space includes dirt piles and Tonka trucks
- Its permanent food truck features burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and fries.
- An indoor bar has 16 taps, bottles and cans and slushies for kids and adults.
OPENING THIS FALL:
The RailYard Black Mountain
Location: 141 Richardson Blvd. Black Mountain, NC 28711
What to know: This will be an open-air multiplex with:
- Food trucks
- Shipping containers
- An outdoor stage
- Event space
- One of the three largest bars in Buncombe County.
The Pure & Proper
Location: 114 E State St, Black Mountain, NC 28711
What to know:
- The Pure & Proper is located in a former Pure Oil Station from the 1940s.
- Start here for a breakfast of espresso and street waffles.
- The cafe also serves lunch or dinner with cocktails.
Taco Billy
Location: 117 Cherry St, Black Mountain, NC 28711
What to know:
- The Asheville-based taco spot takes pride in its locally sourced produce and vendors.
- Breakfast tacos all day. Need we say more?

When to go
If you can, plan your trip around the town’s 50th annual Leaf Festival:
When: Oct. 20-23.

What to expect:
- Music and traditions from cultures around the globe, including African, Latin, Appalachian, Cajun, Celtic, Blues, Bluegrass and more.
- Four stages and a jam tent
- Healing arts and poetry
- An African drum circle.
Plan to camp with about 12,000 of your newest friends for the weekend when you go.
