Go west, tree chopper. Here are the best Christmas fir farms in the NC mountains

If you want to pack up the car and venture out to a Hallmark movie-style farm to choose your Christmas tree this year, you’re living in the right place.

North Carolina is one of our country’s Christmas tree hotspots, producing millions of trees to be sold in-state and across the nation. There are dozens of tree farms around Boone, nestled in the mountains, and they are often coupled with quaint towns and ample spots to stop for some hot cocoa.

There are also Christmas tree lots around the Triangle, if you’re less adventurous, and you can always get your live tree at department and hardware stores nearby.

But if you’re looking to cut down your own tree this year with the help of our nation’s very own tree-growing experts, here’s a list of our state’s ‘Choose & Cut’ farms out west.

(Note: The Fraser Fir is the most common tree grown in North Carolina, though you may be able to find pine, cypress and spruce varieties.)

(Note: Some farms don’t let you cut down the tree yourself, and others only have select Choose & cut varieties. Check websites and contact farms directly to learn each farms’ rules.)
