NC Tex Mex restaurant among best breakfast taco spots in the US, according to Yelp
Everyone knows that Asheville is home to a big list of breweries, beautiful mountains and Biltmore — but did you know it’s also got the best breakfast tacos in North Carolina?
Yelp released a list of the top restaurants for breakfast tacos in each state across the country based on business ratings and reviews.Of all the beloved breakfast spots, Taco Billy in Asheville ranked as the best of the best.
The local restaurant, which also has a location in Black Mountain, opened nearly a decade ago in 2015 — inspired by the owners’ dream of “spreading the good news of breakfast tacos.”
“I was in my fourth year of living abroad in Mexico and decided it was time to come back to the states, and I wanted to own my business … and just had the idea that breakfast tacos didn’t really exist outside of Texas, and I figured I could sell them in North Carolina,” founder and owner Hunter Berry told CharlotteFive.
“It was one of those handful of times in my life where I had an idea, and I felt like that is what I was called to do. And there’s not much more fulfilling than chasing a dream,” said Berry, who grew up in Texas.
Taco Billy doesn’t just have one breakfast taco on the menu — but six, offered all day long:
Billy Holiday tacos: Sausage, eggs and cheddar jack cheese
Billy Ocean tacos: Home fries, eggs and cheddar jack cheese
Billy Joel tacos: Baon, eggs and cheddar jack cheese
Migas Taco: Eggs, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, crispy-fried tortilla strips and cheddar jack cheese
Mama’s Favorite tacos: Sausage, eggs, spinach, sweet potato and goat cheese
Bright & Early tacos: Eggs, sauteed spinach and queso fresco
Aside from its signature breakfast tacos, there’s a wide variety of other veggie, beef and chicken tacos on the menu, including the option to customize and build your own. All are served in flour, corn or special-made plantain tortillas.
“I feel extremely grateful and honored because there’s a lot of really good restaurants out there, but I’m pretty proud of what we do,” Berry said on making Yelp’s list of best breakfast taco spots.
“A lot of our sourcing comes from smaller farms, and I would say that’s an honor for me to share with all of my staff and my family because I couldn’t have done any of it without their help.”
