Looking for a weekend getaway? Plan a trip to NC’s ‘Land of Waterfalls’

If you’re already thinking about your next quick getaway from Charlotte, consider heading west to North Carolina’s “Land of Waterfalls,” a region that more than earns the nickname.

Tucked into Transylvania County, this area is home to more than 250 waterfalls, thanks to its unique mix of elevation and rainfall. According to Southern Living, one of the best places to base your trip is Cedar Mountain, a small community just outside Brevard that feels like “a well-kept secret.”

From there, you’re just minutes from DuPont State Recreational Forest, an outdoor destination with more than 80 miles of trails. It’s home to some of the region’s most popular waterfalls, including Triple Falls, a spot featured in “The Hunger Games,” according to Southern Living.

More than just scenic views

While the waterfalls are the main draw, there’s more to explore beyond the trails. Southern Living points to Cedar Mountain’s creative side, especially along the 276 Arts Corridor, where visitors can browse local pottery studios, watch glassblowing demonstrations or even take a class.

If you’re looking for something a little different between hikes, Southern Living highlighted one of the area’s more unexpected attractions: a round of golf with llama caddies at Sherwood Forest Golf Club. The par-3 course near Cedar Mountain offers a quirky twist, where trained llamas walk alongside players carrying clubs.

Food and drink options are just as laid-back. According to Southern Living, you can start your day with coffee and fresh mini doughnuts at CDRMTN Coffee Bar before heading into the trails, or grab snacks and gear at Hiker and the Hound.

Later on, spots like Cedar Mountain Outpost and Cedar Mountain Canteen double as casual hangouts, with beer gardens, live music and appetizing menus. For something a little stronger, Cedar Mountain Moonshine offers tasting flights and live music events.

Brevard, NC hotels

For a more elevated experience, Pilot Cove offers modern, treehouse-style cabins tucked along the edge of Pisgah National Forest, Southern Living says. These spaces come with full kitchens, bathrooms and even washer-dryers, along with private balconies just minutes from Brevard.

Black Forest Family Camping Resort offers a classic campground experience across 65 wooded acres. It’s a popular escape during the warmer months thanks to its cooler temperatures, according to Southern Living. While the accommodations are simple, essential amenities like showers, laundry and even a pool are included — just be prepared to book the old-fashioned way, by phone.
