Ever wanted a toilet that offers a massage with the push of a button? Or a bathtub built for a 7’ athlete (plus a guest) that holds 500 gallons of water, filled from the ceiling, waterfall-style?
For a cool $4.5 mil, you could be the proud owner of Charlotte’s most expensive condo.
The seller of the 6,583-square-foot home, which occupies half of the fourth and fifth floors of The Trust building at 4th and Tryon streets, hired Plaza Midwood-based Artistic Contractors to complete a $2.3M renovation. Then the owner who commissioned the project (an LLC listed as DH East Coast Realty) decided to move, so he scaled the reno back to $1.7M, nixing plans for a monkey cage, giant aquarium and a snake tank.
Plenty of features are still to be had at the 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath condo in the building built in 1967 that once served as the Federal Savings and Loan building before it was converted to residences for the rich and famous. Cam Newton owns the other half of both floors, and he’s selling one of the two units. Michael Jordan’s condo occupies the entire seventh floor. (We imagine rooftop pool parties to be at the end of one of two spectrums: either wild and crazy or a zenned-out retreat from celebrity life.) Chima Brazilian Steakhouse is at street level.
Custom amenities include:
- A bathtub that actually looks more like a 2-person hot tub, built for a 7’ tall person and his/her plus one. It’s one giant piece of stainless steel with ergonomic seats, holds 500 gallons of water and takes 40 minutes to fill from the ceiling-mounted Kohler fillers. The tub is controlled by a panel on the wall or your smart phone — you can start your bath while you lie in bed.
- A master shower with two extra-large 20” Hans Grohe rain shower heads, six inline body sprayers and speakers for all the singing in the shower your heart desires. The shower doubles as a steam room, and of course — you can also control it from your phone.
- A master toilet, made by Kohler, with a wall panel offering controlled seat temperatures, a massage feature and whatever wash or dry your booty desires. How many comedy movie scenes flashed through your head while reading this?
- A master closet, with a center island holding 40 drawers and topped with cygnus granite from Brazil, may be bigger than your bedroom. The laundry room is conveniently located next to the closet.
- In the middle of the 2-story great room with a 24-foot ceiling, the builders cut a hole in the concrete to create a mezzanine. The contractors told CharlotteFive the plan created a debacle with the HOA, whose members were concerned about the building collapsing, so the project was halted for a few months while the contractors brought in an engineer to prove the project’s safety. Once cutting into the concrete was approved, pieces were removed via elevator, one chunk at a time.
- The upstairs mezzanine surround contains an inset stainless steel glass railing. The space would be perfect for a pool table, a grand piano or seating for dozens of your best friends.
- Downstairs in the mezzanine is a 360-degree see-through DaVinci fireplace with color-changing LEDs. The fireplace surround is a polished real quartz plaster with metal reveals — created to resemble blocks of polished limestone.
- Along the edge of the living space are 24-foot modern aluminum-clad sliding doors with a seamless recessed track — no tripping as you walk out to the patios, which are perfectly situated at the tree line, giving you the impression that you’re at once surrounded by nature and city life. One of the patios boasts an outdoor bar.
- Another bar is tucked away in the billiards room on the bottom floor, next door to a scullery (a prep kitchen) with a Sub-Zero wine storage unit.
- Another Sub-Zero, a refrigerator, is in the main kitchen, which is open-style and connects with the mezzanine and that massive fireplace.
- The smaller details are worth noting, too: Instead of ugly air vents like the rest of us have, HVAC diffusers here are called mud-in-flange — a seamless look that allows air to circulate from a single, modern black strip in the ceiling. The canned lighting is also mud-in-flange, contributing to the minimalist look. Aluminum-recessed drywall reveals, painted with black enamel, offer modern framing around the doorways.
Modern builders with a focus on luxury
Artistic Contractors, a company with just three full-time employees, has been in business since 2010. The contractors have a flair for modern design and focus on luxury custom homes, many on Lake Norman and Lake Wylie, and on infill projects. After competing for and winning this project, Daron Gaon, head of construction and marketing, said he and his colleagues were thrilled for the opportunity. This project was in the top tier of builds/renovations they’ve ever done. “They gave us a lot of leeway to design it the way we want it,” Gaon said. “We really felt like we pulled off something different in Charlotte.”
The current owner bought the place in 2017 for $3.3M. There are two other condo units in Charlotte, Michael Jordan’s and another one in The Trust building, that are currently assessed at a slightly higher value. But once you factor in the $1.7 million renovation, this will be considered Mecklenburg County’s most expensive assessed condominium.
“A ton of thought was put in to this unit and the end result speaks for itself,” said listing agent Brett Carraway of Northstar Real Estate. “This is a new level of Uptown luxury living.”
Carraway is very familiar with this particular condo. “I was the listing agent for the previous owner in 2017. Being trusted to work on this remodel and list the most expensive condo for the second time, I am very thankful that both owners have trusted and believed in me to be their agent,” he told CharlotteFive.
If you’re sweating thinking about that almost $19,000 estimated monthly mortgage payment, the building has another condo for sale — you could always just buy Cam’s place for $3.2 million.
