Blackhawk Hardware is arguably already the coolest hardware store in Charlotte, but it’s not like it has a red spiral slide that will take customers of all ages from the main level to the basement. Or a model train that will travel around the basement ceiling while you shop. Or a woodshop viewing area.

Not yet, anyway.

The hardware store is planning to expand in its current location in ‪Park Road‬ Shopping Center. Anticipated completion of the 12,000-square-foot basement expansion will be March 2020.

The basement is currently used mostly for storage. Take the new elevator if you want — or, the red spiral slide that will be built from the main floor to the basement (yes, adults are welcome). Blackhawk will also install a remote-controlled model train to travel around the basement ceiling.

“My parents started Blackhawk Hardware over 40 years ago and since then we have been striving to make our store a family friendly destination,” Andy Wilkerson, co-owner of Blackhawk, told CharlotteFive. “We’ve loved the support from our community and with our future additions, we’re trying to make it a fun experience for all.”

On the main level, the housewares, grilling, seasonal, pet, paint and cabinet hardware departments will expand.

The tool, lawn and garden, large storage, automotive, electrical, plumbing and hardware departments will move to the basement.

A new entrance to the lower level will be added, as well as three checkout counters.

The store already includes a key shop and offers knife sharpening and UPS shipping. It has a coffee bar run by Dunx Coffee and a popcorn machine. The Garden Center offers a little bit of a secret garden feel in the center of Charlotte’s oldest open-air shopping center.

Pro tip: Bring your pet. Not only can your best friend pick out her own dog bed, but the store has treats for her, too.
