A new, boutique coworking space is set to open this month in South End
On the edge of scooter-whizzing, craft-beer-drinking, energetic South End comes a heads-down, focused coworking space for the established professional and solo-entrepreneur.
Welcome to The Mill.
Dan Burdi, a 31-year-old entrepreneur who moved to Charlotte from New York in 2011, is opening the The Mill Coworking at Atherton Lofts by the end of August while also juggling a full-service summer storage company and the opening of his second Mathnasium, math-only learning center.
“I felt that a smaller, boutique-type coworking space would be a great way to appeal to folks like myself looking for a convenient location and comfortable environment to be hyper-focused on getting work done,” said Burdi (who clearly has a lot of work on his plate). “When I sit at a desk I like to be dialed-in and heads-down, and wanted to create a workplace where that was the focus.”
The Mill, located at 2108 South Blvd., Suite 211 next to Publix and named to honor the rich history of Atherton Mill, holds 17 dedicated desks. There are 12 desks on the second story and five additional premium, semi-private desks up the spiral staircase in the loft area.
There is also seating, fast internet, free printing and access to the conference room for up to 10 members at the Flex Membership level.
While the Flex Membership starts at $150/month, the Dedicated Desk Membership starts at $400/month and the Dedicated Semi-Private Desk Membership starts at $450/month.
Booked up, this coworking space can hold 27 people. It’s an intimate size compared with coworking spaces like Hygge (with more than 200 members across three locations) and Advent Coworking (with about 100 members at one location).
“I love to network and I love meeting new people,” Burdi said. “I think a lot of people are like me in that way. However, as much as great networking leads to meeting great people and ultimately great things, I tend to get distracted by it. I really feel that creating a focused and heads-down atmosphere will lend itself to getting more work done without distractions.”
The design fits that distraction-free vibe, too, with a clean layout and large desks. The minimalist decor offers a blend of soft-grey-blue walls, exposed brick, ample indoor foliage and enormous windows. It’s pristine.
But the ambiance isn’t the only perk. Burdi hints at locally sourced coffee and snacks that will be available to members, plus monthly recurring events like First Wednesday Waffles, a Breakfast Burrito Breakdown and brief stand-ups to encourage a community atmosphere.
All membership levels are offered 24/7 access, printing/scanning/copying services, high speed WiFi, access to the conference room and breakout room, access to the private phone room, and other beverages.
So, who will we find here?
While The Mill is not catering to a specific industry or category of entrepreneurs, Burdi said, “We’re looking for people that are serious about their work, have a focused drive towards achieving their goals and are dedicated to providing a service or product that they are passionate about. I feel that surrounding yourself with great people is what can make you great and motivate you to achieve your own goals.”
